John Steenhuisen MPL- Brief CV

 

Ø  John Steenhuisen was born in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, he attended school in Durban North, first at Chelsea drive and then at Northwood school where he matriculated in 1993.

Ø  John served as the chairman of the then Democratic Party in Durban North from 1997 to 1999.

Ø  John was elected to the then Durban city council in 1999 at the age of 22, making him one of the youngest Councillors in the history of the city. He represented Durban North until the local government elections in 2000

Ø  He was re-elected by the Durban North community in 2000 and served on the eThekwini Unicity Council. He was returned to office in 2006.

Ø  John has served on numerous committees on the council including Town planning, the metropolitan police sub-committee and now on the Executive Committee

Ø  John is the Caucus leader of the official opposition, the Democratic Alliance, on the council and serves on the city’s executive committee.

Ø  John serves at an executive level on many community committees including three ratepayer associations, two community police forums, the Broadway business forum, the friends of the library and the Northwood Knights

Ø  John is a past president of the Rotaract club of North Durban.

Ø  In 2005 John was recognised by Rotary International as a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his service to the community.

Ø  In August 2006 John was named DA public representative of the year 2005-2006 at the KZN provincial congress.

Ø  John is an alumnus of the International Academy for Leadership in Gummersbach, Germany and the American Council for Young Political Leaders in Washington DC, USA.

Ø  People he admires most include John F. Kennedy, Helen Zille, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela.

Ø  John is married to Julie and they live in Durban North and have a 2 daughters a 3 year old named Ashleigh and a 1 year old daughter named Caroline.

Ø  In 2009 John was nominated as a candidate for the KZN provincial legislature as the party’s number one candidate.

Ø  In April 2009 John was elected the leader of the DA caucus in the KZN legislature.
